I do assign homework about once a week and I feel the same dilemma he metioned; the kids that need to do the homework don't and the kids that don't need the practice do the homwork. I finally resolved this issue by deciding to assign fewer homework problems and less often. There is a slight chance that the right child will do the homework thus furthering there knowledege in that subject area. Also, in my class, students do not get recess unless they have completed all their homework, and so recess is a good time for me to fill gaps and bridge misunderstood concepts.
Mark's edtech blog post on SSR has inspired me to use blogging during SSR. During the first semester I try to be very faithful to 45 minunets of SSR daily. I think this helps to build interest in reading and stamina. The childeren love having SSR and they end up getting so involved in their books they will take them to lunch with them. My hope is that allowing the students to use the laptops during SSR they will want to look up their favorite blogs during recess and when they finish their assignments early in computer lab.

Thing #3

I set up my blog and wrote my first two posts. I hope to become more familiar with blogging so posting becomes faster, and more brainless for me, it was somewhat of a challenge this past year. Even with my amateur knowledge of "the blog" my kids thought it was the coolest thing ever. I hope to learn how to have students comment on other students' comments.
"Digital Learners" are exactly what I am hoping to create in my classroom. Most of the kiddos in my classroom do not have a computer or Internet access at home so I am hoping to flood them with computer access and the Internet so that they will be aligned with the current trends in technology. Computers are such an important part of society, I want the kids coming from my classrooms to be technologically savvy.

Thing #1

I don't think I was a lifelong learner until I became a teacher. I am alternative certified so it wasn't until I began my AC classes that I realized how important growth in all areas of life was. Now I am very interested in all learning, not just psychology. I have found we can find interesting things about people in all realms of academia.
After viewing the 71/2 habits of highly effective people I know that the most important habit to me is to take responsibility for my own learning. Others are always around to teach me, but I must be willing to engage and apply the new knowledge so that it will not be lost. The habit that is the easiest for me is taking responsibility for my learning, viewing problems as challenges, and feeling confident in learning. I know that when we are learning it is okay to make mistakes, learning is the avenue by which we can ask questions, make mistakes, and learn from our questions and mistakes.
The hardest habit for me is to begin with the end in mind, so many times I don't know what exactly I want to learn; I want to know it all. I think if I will become more specific about my quests they will become more fruitful.
